The Plan
We've spent a lot of time exploring the Three Sisters / Twin Peaks / Great Pinnacle area on our Tech 1 excursions at Point Lobos. Today was a chance to explore the Granite Point side and learn more about the dive sites out there. The plan was to drop along the sand channel and hit the north end of Middle Reff, jump to Granite Point Wall, and then follow the 120' contour out towards Crossroads and Thumbs Up. We planned for 35 minutes at an average bottom depth of 130' for a total of 25 minutes of deco.
The Dive
We jumped in at the ramp, strapped on our bottles and scooters, and finished our pre-dive checks. We surface scootered out to the start of the sand channel and dropped in about 20' of water. We followed the channel until we picked up Middle Reef and we cruised along it to the north end. We jumped over to Granite Point Wall and followed it to the end and continued along the rock / sand interface until we hit about 100'. We followed that contour over several of the ridges until we crossed another small sand channel before running into the wall that has Thumbs Up at the top. All total, we had about 20 minutes of scooter time and 10 minutes below 70'. We stowed our scooters and kicked around the structure in the 130' to 140' range for the remainder of our time on the site. The life is not as extensive on the wall as it is out near Twin Peaks, but it was still a very nice structure. We left and followed the 130' contour back to the Granite Point Pinnacles and then jumped from pinnacle to pinnacle until we arrived back at Granite Point Wall for our deco gas switch.
The Deco
Ratio Deco was completed on 50% O2 from 70' to the surface. 25 minutes deco time due to a 120' average depth and approximately 40 minute bottom time. 4, 4, 1, 1, 3, 8, 4 and up. We spent a little time at the end of Granite Point Wall for the 70' stop. The 60' to 30' stops were all accomplished on the trigger, and we stopped at the worm mound for our 20' stop. Allison and I both made a practice SMB shoot to take advantage of our 8 minutes of hang time. We reeled them up as we made our way up to the 10' stop and eventually the surface. A short surface scooter later and we were back at the ramp. After gear cleanup, we moved the group to R.G. Burger for lunch.
